Housing inside Yosemite Valley is largely institutional rather than market-driven. The valley's residences consist chiefly of housing for National Park Service staff and concession employees, and private ownership is rare within park boundaries. As a result, people looking for a home in the area overwhelmingly look to the gateway communities of Mariposa, Oakhurst, El Portal, and Fish Camp, where the region's residential stock is found. Those towns range from historic Gold Rush-era communities to smaller foothill and mountain settlements, and they define the actual housing landscape around the park.

Life in Yosemite Valley revolves around the park. Residents and workers share the valley with a steady flow of visitors, and daily life is shaped by the seasonal rhythms of tourism, trail work, and park operations. Yosemite Village anchors the valley with lodging, dining, a visitor center, and services, while the surrounding meadows, river, and cliffs provide constant access to the outdoors. It is a specialized, place-driven lifestyle suited to people who work in or near the park and value proximity to the Sierra Nevada above everyday urban conveniences.

Yosemite Valley is reached by three mountain corridors: Highway 140 through Merced and Mariposa, Highway 41 from Fresno and Oakhurst, and Highway 120 from the west and from the eastern Sierra near Mammoth Lakes. The Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System provides public bus service into the valley year-round on Highway 140 and seasonally on Highways 41 and 120, connecting the park to gateway towns and transit hubs. Within the valley, shuttle service and pedestrian and bicycle routes move visitors between lodging, trailheads, and viewpoints.

Recreation in Yosemite Valley is among the most celebrated in the national park system. Hiking routes lead to landmarks such as Half Dome and the Mist Trail, while the valley's walls draw climbers from around the world to El Capitan and surrounding formations. Yosemite Falls, one of North America's tallest waterfalls, and the meadows along the Merced River offer more accessible sightseeing. Beyond the valley, the wider park adds giant sequoia groves, high-country lakes, and backcountry trails across the Sierra Nevada.
