The Sunol Glen Unified School District is a single-school district serving students in transitional-kindergarten through eighth grade from its campus in the heart of town. The district's one-school structure keeps classes small and gives it a strong place in community life, and it holds open enrollment for students from neighboring cities. Graduating students continue to Foothill High School in the Pleasanton Unified School District, giving Sunol families a full public K-12 pathway.

Sunol sits along Niles Canyon Road (State Route 84), a designated scenic route that winds through the canyon toward Fremont and the South Bay. Interstate 680 runs along the valley's eastern edge, providing the main freeway link to Pleasanton, Dublin, San Jose, and the wider Bay Area, and the Sunol Grade portion of the corridor is a well-known East Bay commute route. The Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) rail line passes through the valley on its route between the San Jose area and the San Joaquin Valley, and the Niles Canyon Railway preserves the canyon's rail heritage.

The Sunol Regional Wilderness is the community's outdoor centerpiece, offering thousands of acres of hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing, anchored by the Green Barn Visitor Center. Alameda Creek runs through the valley for fishing and creek-side walks, and nearby Sycamore Grove Park adds easy trails and wildlife. The Niles Canyon Railway provides heritage train rides through the canyon, and the surrounding East Bay Regional Park District lands extend the trail network into the hills on all sides.
